HRM-7003 v4: Labor Relations
This course will focus on a variety of elements within labor unions. Some of the elements include laws, history, and structure. Although these are just a few things that make up a union, each has relevance.

In the United States, there are both public organizations, for instance, the U.S. Federal Government, and private organizations such as your local grocery store chain, such as Kroger. Although similar in most ways, such as operating under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), there are also many differences, like the observance of holidays. For instance, a grocery store may stay open for Christmas while the Federal Government does not. Even though the union store remains open, it is governed by a strict set of laws, such as hours and pay an employee may receive on a holiday. This is just one example of how private and public sector unions operate. In order to understand how labor unions are influencing the workforce, it is important to fully understand the current status of labor unions in the United States.

This week, you will explore the status of unionized organizations within the U.S. today. In addition to the status, you will also learn the role of both public and private unions in the United States. You will also learn how each union plays a role in their respective organizations.

As shown below in Figure 1, union membership in the private sector in the United States has declined over the past three decades.

Union membership in the public sector shows a different story, as shown below in Figure 2. Membership in the public sector has fluctuated in the past twenty years. Differences between these two sectors and changes in the times contribute to these numbers.
