Students will be required to submit a recorded presentation of an anthropological topic that engages some of the terms learned in the course by analyzing an essay written by an anthropologist in the Anthropology News. You will select a published essay of your choice, read it carefully, discuss it, and apply some content learned in the class. Be sure to read instructions and rubric carefully in assignment (3 minute minimum and 4 minute maximum for presentations)
In this final short recorded presentation, you will write and present a critical thinking response to a published essay of your choice from the Anthropology News. What is Anthropology News? See below from their website:
Anthropology News is the American Anthropological Association’s (AAA) award-wining member magazine, published bimonthly in print and continually on our . Each issue of the print magazine (distributed to AAA members) is developed on a theme—often topics of general interest, current events, or discussions in the discipline—by the editor who works directly with authors. The editor solicits content through CFPs to the whole membership and direct invitations. The Anthropology News website (Links to an external site.) (open to the public) publishes stories from the print magazine and much more in the way of topical and timely content, AAA news, in memoriam notices, and submissions from AAA sections. Anthropology News is a place for telling insightful and analytical anthropology stories. Our aim is to champion engaging, incisive, anthropology writing and multimodal content from across the discipline. We aim to develop fresh scholarly or professional argument that appeals to anthropologists and anyone with an interest in anthropology. Think magazine-style stories with scientific bite. Telling our stories and sharing our expertise in this way is not about simplifying our empirical work or reducing our complex ideas; it is about using a clean and clear style to convey that complexity and nuance.
Your 1) first task is to sift and research on the website for an essay on a topic that interests you and is aligned with one or more concepts in the Perspectives (2017) textbook. For example, you can look for essays on economy, political, arts, food security, race and racism, sexuality, etc. Go to the website where you will find essays under the following tabs: In Focus, Opinion, or Section News. Do not choose book reviews or an in memoriam essays. From the website, you will have to click on “older posts” at the end of the webpage in order to access previously published essays. Keep clicking until you find something of interest. Or, you can use the search tab and search by key words. For example, if you’re interested in COVID-19, or gossip, moneys, war, etc, you can search by key word and see if something has been covered on that term/topic.
Once you identify and choose an essay, your 2) second task is to approve the title and author by Week 3. You should avoid writing a response to/presenting on the same article essay as another classmate so check the titles already posted in the Student Lounge Discussion Thread. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of essays in Anthropology News to choose from. I will entertain maybe one of two repeats, but all others will be penalized.
Your 3) final task, is to present a critical analysis including the following:
Record (mp4 preferred) a 3-4 minute long presentation using PowerPoint. On the title slide, include the title and author of the paper.
In the presentation, you must:
1) Summarize the nuts and bolts of the essay (2 points).
2) Explain the author’s research or opinion contribution for the public (4 points).
3) What are your reflections about the essay: its importance and/or uniqueness. Also, incorporate any concepts related to the essay discussed in our Perspectives textbook (4 points).
4) This presentation will be evaluated on application of relevant course materials (2 pts).
Do not plagiarize. Submit acceptable file formats (pdf., pptx., and mp4.). There are tons of FREE recorders available on the web. Late submissions will receive -1/per day.
Total for final evaluation: 12 points.
IMPORTANT! Students must upload their final evaluation presentations by August 01 at 11:59pm (July 31st preferred)!
