A rubric is a particularly helpful assessment tool as it can be used when implementing either a formative assessment (assessment for learning throughout instruction) or a summative assessment (assessment of learning at the end of instruction). It is useful for teachers to be skilled in creating rubrics since they not only clarify expectations for students but also help teachers identify desired outcomes and specific skills to target.

Using the “Rubrics” template, design a rubric that could be used to assess a skill based on state standards.

Part 1: Rubric Creation

After reviewing the section on rubrics in Chapter 2 of the textbook, identify a specific skill to target that is based on Arizona content and ELP standards for a grade level of your choice. State content and language objectives and describe a task or activity that would provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the target skill.

Then create an original rubric that assesses the activity and includes the following:

Rubric title

Point or percentage-based grading

A graphic organizer containing a minimum of four content-related criteria (rows) to be addressed and four proficiency categories (columns)

Titles that describe each content area and proficiency category

Descriptions of the requirements/criteria that must be met at each level of performance

Part 2: Reflection

Write a 250-500 word reflection including the following:

Explanation of how the task or activity could be differentiated for ELLs at various ELP levels and justification of how the rubric can be used to assess all ELLs.

Summary of the most challenging aspects of the rubric creation process and tips or best practices you plan to keep in mind when developing rubrics.

Description of how you plan to use rubrics in the classroom in your future professional practice.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
