st at 11:59pm

Late Assignments will lose 10 points for each day

I will not accept papers after 12/15 at 11:59pm

Step 1: Pick a topic from our class that interests you. Potential topics include: income inequality,

racial inequality, sexism, immigration, culture, crime, education, the environment, and or social

movements these are just a few.

Step 2: Find one CURRENT (2022) news article (minimum 2 pages of text) that discusses

your topic as a current event in the United States or the world. Possible sources include The

New York Times, NPR, — any newspaper or online news source that is credible. Please ask

me if you are not sure about the source.

Step 3: Actively read your article. I find it easier to print out the article and take notes in the

margins. When you read the article, you should: highlight important points/arguments,

describe the evidence and or sources they use and summarize each article’s

focus/argument.

Step 4: Name and describe Two concepts or theories from sociology that the article

highlights. Please refer to the class textbook to locate the theories or concepts that your

article addresses and cite the page numbers that you use to describe the concepts or

theories. A citation would look like this: (Wade 2022:45).

Step 5: Write 2-3 pages double spaced (Times New Roman, size 12 font, 1-inch

margins). You must submit a word document and I will take 10 points off if you submit

a pdf or a non-word document. Your paper should include the following three parts:

Part I. In two paragraphs, summarize the article’s main points. Tell me: what the

article argues. What the article uses for evidence. Why the article is important and

why we should we care about this topic.

Part II. What 2 sociological concepts or theories do these articles connect to?

Describe and cite them.

Example: An article about human trafficking might connect to concepts

or theories related to gendered oppression, capitalism, and political

power, simultaneously.

Part III. What have you learned from these articles? Did the articles change your

perspective on the topic and if so, how? How will you tell other people about this

topic, specifically? – You must include links to the article you used.

Step 6: Upload your paper to Blackboard BEFORE 11:59PM ON DECEMBER 12.

Successful papers will closely follow all of the directions and answer all of the questions.

PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. If you are unsure about

anything please contact me. I will read any draft that you bring to my office hours.
