Assessment Description

By using assessment data and reflecting on individual ELLs’ learning outcomes, teachers can plan effective lessons that meet the language and content learning goals of all ELLs in the classroom. Within that planning, it is important to consider the needs of specific students, including the language needs of ELLs. Ensuring that instructional strategies are evidence-based, student-centered, and developmentally appropriate will help meet those needs and engage all students in the process of learning.

Part 1: Lesson Plan

Using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” “WIDA Focus on Differentiation, Part 1,” and “WIDA Focus on Differentiation, Part 2,” create a fifth grade lesson plan for the content area of your choice which uses evidence-based, student-centered, developmentally appropriate interactive approaches.

Address the following:

In the “WIDA Focus on Differentiation, Part 1” resource, locate the chart with background information on three ELL fifth grade students: Marco, Julia, and Amitabh.

Review the information on each student, paying special attention to the English language proficiency assessment data, listed as “Placement test scores,” or “ACCESS for ELLs test scores” for each student.

Plan a lesson on a different content topic than the provided example of rainforest deforestation. You may use the Arizona Academic Standards or the content standards from the state in which you plan to teach.

Include both content and English language proficiency/development standards within the “National/State Learning Standards” section of the template.

Determine content and language learning targets/objectives based on the English language proficiency assessment data for the three ELL students.

Include instructional strategies for the multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression that are evidence-based, student-centered, developmentally appropriate interactive approaches for ELLs.

Part 2: Reflection

In 250-500 words, reflect on how you would modify instruction if Marco, Julia, and Amitabh did not meet the language and content objectives of your lesson plan. Address the modifications you would make for each student given their different English language proficiencies. Additionally, discuss how the strategies chosen in the multiple means sections of the lesson are evidence-based, student-centered, developmentally appropriate interactive approaches for ELLs.
