SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER MODELS

There are a range of lenses social workers can use to better understand how substance use disorders develop and what treatment approaches might be most effective. The biological model, the psychological model, and the sociocultural model are three examples of models that can meaningfully shed light on the underlying factors that lead to substance misuse. However, none of these individual models can fully capture the nuances of every possible factor that contributes to a substance use disorder. Thus, the etiology of substance use disorders is best understood by integrating insights offered by all three.

In this Assignment, you analyze the unique contributions of the biological, psychological, and sociocultural models to our understanding of substance use disorder development and examine how the integration of the models can guide social workers in their work with this client population.
