Professional and ethical behavior is so important that it is one of the nine essential competencies for every social worker. The items below detail these responsibilities and are based largely on the Educational and Policy Standards established by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the NASW Code of Ethics. Professional and Ethical Behavior is considered Competency One in the CSWE standards. Furthermore, as an accredited program through the CSWE, we are required to ensure that students demonstrate field readiness and baseline competency in order to continue forward movement through the program. It is also our ethical responsibility to ensure our students and alumni are equipped to serve field clients and future clients with professionalism, excellence, compassion, and a commitment to justice, at an entry-level of practice.
Social work entails self-awareness and self-reflection and a willingness to engage in an ongoing process of incorporating feedback into one’s growth process.. Professionalism is expected to ensure that clients are served well, and thus is critical for ethical practice.
As you cultivate a habit of self-reflection, please review these items and consider your areas of strength and areas for growth.
